Faiyum is renowned for its prehistoric remains, housing the oldest fossils of the Nile Valley. During our special 4x4 excursion, we will explore the largely unknown area north of Lake Qarun. The petrified forest in this region offers a fascinating glimpse into nature over 50 million years ago. We will also visit Qasr el Sagha, with lunch included.

ITINERARY

After meeting at your hotel, we will depart with our Misrona Tours guide to the south of Cairo to admire the stunning landscapes of the Faiyum oasis. Before reaching the oasis, we will head to the temple of Qasr el Sagha.

Qasr el Sagha: This temple was constructed using limestone blocks of various sizes, fitting tightly together without mortar and featuring joints at oblique corners.

Gabal Qatrani Reserve and Qarun Petrified Forest: In nearby quarries, particularly at Gabal Qatrani, fossilized ancestors of monkeys (Proconsul), elephants (Moerithrium, Arsinoetherium), and other terrestrial and marsh mammals have been discovered. The Faiyum Depression was also home to Neolithic humans; whose sites reveal significant advancements in the use of stone artifacts.

Wedan el Faras: We will visit a large black basalt quarry on the northern edge of Gebel Qatrani, near the notable hills known as Widan el-Faras. Once an Old Kingdom quarry, this site provided the basalt used in the pyramid temples and is located about 340 meters above sea level.

Lunch: After completing the tour, we will head to a restaurant for lunch.

Return: Finally, we will return to your hotels in Cairo
