It was famous for the temples erected during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods dedicated to the worship of the goddess Isis; goddess of music, love and joy that spread throughout the Mediterranean, until the temple was closed in 430 AD. The island of File was submerged in the 20th century under the waters impounded by the Aswan Dam, although under the patronage of UNESCO, especially the French, the temples were dismantled, moved and rebuilt on the nearby islet of Agilkia. It bears names of several governors starting with Nectaneb II, pharaoh of the XXX dynasty, sacred buildings of some importance began to be erected on the island. The Ptolemies continued to expand the complex and, later, some Roman emperors such as Augustus, Tiberius, Trajan and Hadrian, ordered the construction of more buildings.

The temples are part of the Open-Air Museum of Nubia and Aswan, a complex that was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979 under the name of "Nubian Monuments". The temples were carved out of the rock during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses II in the 13th century BC. C., as a monument dedicated to said pharaoh and his wife Nefertari, to commemorate their supposed victory in the battle of Kadesh and show their power to their Nubian neighbors. In 1968, the complex was relocated on an artificial hill, built on nearby land above the level of the future Lake Nasser. The removal of the temples was necessary to prevent them from being submerged, after the construction of the Aswan High Dam, by the reservoir formed by the waters of the Nile River.
