THE OASIS IN EGYPT

AL WAHAT

The Oases of Egypt are spread over the area of the Western Desert that forms two-thirds of the country's surface. The closest ones are called ... The oases of Bahariya (in Arabic: el-Wahat el-Bahariya, "The oasis of the north" or simply Bahariya). It is an oasis located in the western desert of Egypt, and belongs to the province of Giza. It is west of Cairo for about 420 kilometers, and is located in an oval depression of about 2000 km², surrounded by mountains and rich sources of spring water.
Its main products are guavas, mangoes, dates and olives. It has a museum. The Bahariya oasis, inhabited since predynastic times, was an important agricultural center during the Pharaonic era, being famous for its wine already in the Middle Kingdom.
During the XXVI dynasty the oasis flourished as an important agricultural and commercial center. At the end of the Greek period, perhaps when Greeks and Romans fought for control of the oases, irrigation systems were reduced, beginning the economic decline.
In the fourth century, in the absence of Roman troops, the incursions of violent tribes in the region caused a population decline in various areas of the oases, which were flooded by sand.
Archaeological sites: Remains of stone tools from the Paleolithic period. Decorated tombs of local rulers, during the XXVI dynasty of Egypt. Ancient Greco-Roman necropolis, in the Valley of the «golden mummies».
