Full-day tour to Faiyum with lunch
Faiyum (Al-Fayyum) is a city located 110 km southwest of Cairo, situated on the shores of the lake of the same name, and serves as the capital of the province. Thanks to the Bahr Yosef canal, dating back to the 12th Dynasty, Faiyum transformed into a prosperous agricultural region. The area of Lake Birket Qarun is approximately 200 km². Unlike a typical oasis, whose fertility relies solely on water from springs, the cultivated land in Faiyum benefits from silt carried by the Nile through the Bahr Yosef.
To the southwest of Faiyum lies the Gharak depression, and Wadi Rayan, a barren depression covering 725 km², is located to the west of Gharak. The entire region is below sea level and is surrounded by the Libyan hills, except for the canal entrance. The lowest point in the province is Lake Birket Qarun, which is 43 meters below the Mediterranean Sea.
ITINERARY
After meeting at your hotel, we will depart with our Misrona Tours guide to the south of Cairo to explore the impressive and fertile landscapes of the Fayoum oasis.
Karanis: The oasis features a vast expanse of land irrigated by canals from the Nile. In Ancient Egypt, this location held significant importance. Our first visit will be to the ruins of the village of Karanis, one of the few surviving villages from Ancient Egypt. We will also explore the small museum at the Kom Oshim complex.
Qasr Qarun: Next, we will continue to the ruins of the Roman temple known as Qasr Qarun, passing by Lake Qarun, one of the oasis's most important areas. Its saline waters lie below sea level, and the lake is renowned for fishing, water sports, and birdwatching.
Lunch: After enjoying lunch, we will transfer back to your hotel in Cairo.
Pyramid of Hawara: Finally, we will drive to visit the Pyramid of Hawara, built by Amenemhat III (1860 BC – 1814 BC), a pharaoh of the 12th Dynasty whose reign is regarded as the golden age of the Middle Kingdom (2055 BC – 1650 BC).
Then, we will transfer back to your hotel in Cairo.
